Ile d'Aix

Yesterday we took a boat from La Rochelle out to Ile d'Aix.
The boat ride was a little over an hour with a pass by Fort Boyard, a fort started by Napoleon and completed in the mid 1800's.  It sits out there in the straits between 2 islands.

We opted for a return boat that would give us 4 hours to explore the island.  The island is not very big and they say you can walk around it in 2 hours.  We did in about 3 hours, taking our time to explore, enjoy the views, and have a picnic lunch.
We arrived near low tide and it showed.
Many boats that we anchored off shore were sitting in the mud.  The low tide exposed the oyster beds that are all over and we saw some people harvesting them.

The low tide also stranded a few big jellies.  There are beaches all around the island, some small, some big.
Sometimes you are walking along the shore and sometimes in the woods.

By the time the boat left to go back the tide had risen and the boats were floating again.
What a difference 4 hours makes.
It a beautiful place and a great way to spend the day.

They grow grapes everywhere in France!
